Because of environmental concerns, the Bureau of Mines investigated an anhydrous chlorination process for the recovery of copper from chalcopyrite. Pelletized concentrate was reacted continuously with chlorine in a vertical shaft reactor at deg to deg c to extract copper-iron chlorides and elemental sulfur.
